  • Common Scans:
  • Dating Scan: Performed in the first trimester to confirm gestational age.

Blood Tests

  • First-Trimester Screening: Combines blood tests and ultrasound measurements to assess the risk of chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome (trisomy 21) and Edward syndrome (trisomy 18).
  • Markers Measured: Pregnancy-associated plasma protein-A (PAPP-A) and human chorionic gonadotropin (hCG).
  • Nuchal Translucency Scan: An ultrasound scan measuring the fluid at the back of the fetal neck.
  • Second-Trimester Maternal Serum Screening: Also known as the quad screen or multiple marker screening, it measures levels of certain proteins and hormones in the mother’s blood.
  • Markers Measured: Alpha-fetoprotein (AFP), hCG, estriol, and inhibin-A.
  • Purpose: Screens for chromosomal abnormalities and neural tube defects (e.g., spina bifida).
  • Glucose Challenge Test (GCT) and Glucose Tolerance Test (GTT):
  • GCT: Typically performed around 24-28 weeks to screen for gestational diabetes.
  • GTT: Conducted if GCT results are elevated, to confirm gestational diabetes.
  • Rhesus (Rh) Factor and Antibody Screening: Determines Rh status and screens for antibodies that might affect the fetus in Rh-negative individuals.

Genetic Screening and Diagnostic Tests

  • Non-Invasive Prenatal Testing (NIPT): Analyzes fetal DNA fragments in the mother’s blood to screen for chromosomal abnormalities such as Down syndrome, Edwards syndrome, and Patau syndrome.
  • Who It’s For: Typically offered to individuals at increased risk of chromosomal abnormalities.
  • Chorionic Villus Sampling (CVS): Involves taking a small sample of placental tissue for genetic testing.
  • Timing: Performed as early as 10-13 weeks.
  • Purpose: Diagnoses chromosomal abnormalities and genetic conditions.
  • Amniocentesis: Involves collecting a sample of amniotic fluid for genetic testing.
  • Timing: Typically performed between 15-20 weeks.
  • Purpose: Diagnoses chromosomal abnormalities, genetic conditions, and neural tube defects.

Other Tests and Measurements

  • Cervical Length Measurement: Assesses the length of the cervix via ultrasound to predict the risk of preterm birth.
  • Who It’s For: Typically performed in high-risk pregnancies.
  • Fetal Monitoring: Techniques such as fetal heart rate monitoring using Doppler ultrasound or electronic fetal monitoring to assess fetal well-being and detect signs of distress.
